Move
to Balance
The muscles and joints become “unbalanced” through
unhealthy movement habits and we return to balance with healthy
movement patterns. At Pilates Westwood, we teach our clients
to restore dynamic balance. Pilates is one of several effective
systems we use to teach balanced, graceful, pain-free movement.
When we sit, stand and lift
objects with rounded backs and shoulders, there is unnatural
stress placed on our joints and our muscles work too hard
and become fatigued. Forcing our bodies to move in unbalanced
patterns leads to some muscles becoming excessively short
and tight, some muscles to only work or “fire”
intermittently and others to become excessively stretched,
which renders them weak.
When unbalanced movement patterns
become habit, we begin to feel stiffness, followed by increasing
soreness then acute injury. Unfortunately, a painful injury
is usually the first signal which is strong enough to get
our attention that something is wrong.
Poor posture, clumsy movement
and ultimately, injury do not “just happen.” These
habits must be repeated for years before an obvious problem
develops. The good news is if we regularly stretch the short,
tight muscles and strengthen the weak muscles and learn to
move in balanced ways which are in harmony with the design
of our joints, we will have much less, if any pain, our posture
will be easily maintained and we are free to move with strength
and ease. We also have more energy because we are not wasting
it keeping our muscles unnecessarily contracted.
The professional staff of movement
educators at Pilates Westwood is here to
help you realize the possibility of graceful movement.
